Department of Botany

The Department of Botany, established in 1971 is one of the leading Departments of Nagpur, teaching in the field of plant sciences. Botany Department has well qualified and experienced faculty members, Dr. R. R. Khapekar, Professor & Head, Dr. S. G. Hate, Dr. (Mrs.) P. A. Lambat and Dr. (Mrs.) M. N. Bhambri, Assistant Professors of department are committed and dedicated for quality education in the subject. All the staff members of the department are Ph.D degree holders with research experience in various fields. A well-balanced curriculum and qualified faculty have been the hall mark of the department since its inception.

In addition to teaching aids like traditional chalk and board method, special interactive classes by applying group discussion, question-answer, demonstration method are also used to encourage the students and thereby to improve their learning. In-house seminars, guest lectures and field visitsare frequently organized by the department to help the students to acquire knowledge, skill and self-confidence.Students are continuously encouraged to participate in various curricular and cocurricular activities.They are also motivated by teaching staffmembers to participate in various intercollegiate competitions/exhibitions and many students has proved themselves by bagging various awards. The hidden creativity of the students is manifested through the publication of Wall Magazines in the department. Special classes are held during the study leave of the students with special attention paid to slow learners.

All the staff members are actively engaged in research and regularly present and publishresearch papers on various National and International platforms.Faculty members are pride recipient of many national and international awards. Teaching staff arealso active members of various scientific and other organizations.

The departmental library has a collection of text books and reference books covering the areas of Plant Sciences & also the general topics of Life Sciences. Reading room facility with free access to the text and reference books is available to the students.

OBJECTIVES:

  • To inculcate scientific temperament in students
  • To deliver knowledge on latest innovations and development in the field of plant sciences by arranging expert talks, presentations, seminars etc.
  • To provide platform to students to prepare and present their work through power point presentations, seminars, posters and other competitive events.

 

ABOUT:Botanical society is a platform run by U.G., P.G. and Ph.D. students of department of Botany. In this society all office bearers and members are students and  faculty members mentor students for proper functioning of various activities of society throughout the year. The activities taken under the banner of society are seminars, workshop, guest lectures, botanical excursions, quiz, presentations and various other competitions.

BEST PRACTICE OF THE DEPARTMENT:

“Students skill for Effective Learning”

Objective: To encourage active learning and increased interaction between students and teachers.

Activity: Students of B.Sc. First year were given a task to prepare charts on syllabus-based topics. They were guided by the expert and efficient staff membersof the department. Later, all the charts were compiled in the form of PDF and QR code was prepared by students for easy access to all.
